In the Spring of 2020, Catherine Rowell and Trina Nkhazi began researching the idea of establishing a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, that would have a service area footprint aligned with the boundaries of the City of South Fulton, Georgia.
Twenty-five members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were invited to join a virtual meeting to become acquainted with each other and to gauge their interest and commitment to move forward to establish a city chapter in the name of Alpha Kappa Alpha. The results were overwhelmingly positive.
In the months that followed, many virtual meetings (due to the global pandemic) were held to develop a strategic plan, and a calendar of events aligned with the national program targets. The plan, calendar and interest group application were submitted to the Regional Director Carolyn Gauze Randolph and received approval on June 27, 2021. Recognizing the magnitude of the undertaking, seven Alpha Kappa Alpha women were invited to join the Official Interest Group resulting in the following 32 potential Charter Members committed to undertaking the work to charter an Alpha Kappa Alpha Chapter.
The City of South Fulton Professional Pearls have been welcomed with open arms, and the group has been served diligently at many community events to include but not limited to the Divine 9 5K, Fill Your Bag Fill Your Mind, Lion’s Foundation Eyeglasses Drives; Soles4Souls shoe drives, combatting childhood hunger, chemo clothing drive, Enhancing our environment and conserving natural resources with the Britta for Bottles challenge, and the beautification of Sandtown Park, just to name a few.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Board of Directors approved the City of South Fulton Professional Pearls to charter on February 17, 2023, and the official ceremony was scheduled to be held on June 11, 2023. Upon chartering, our chapter has continued to flourish and be home to a fast-growing, sustaining service organization.
